China has urged Japan to uphold the post-World War II international order following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the disputed Iturup Island.
Axar.az reports, citing China Daily, that Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun made a statement.
"China maintains that the outcomes of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War should be earnestly respected and upheld," Guo said.
“China urges the Japanese side to abide by the postwar international order enshrined in the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Proclamation, and other international legal instruments,” Guo said.
Putin visited Iturup, known as Etorofu in Japan, on Thursday. Japan claims the island as part of its Northern Territories, while Russia considers it part of the Southern Kurils.
