French President Emmanuel Macron has firmly opposed the participation of the Palestinian movement Hamas in the governance of the Gaza Strip, stressing that Hamas should not be involved in any future Palestinian administration in the region.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Macron expressed his support for a reconstruction plan for Gaza, which was approved by the League of Arab States on March 4, Caliber.Az reports.
The French leader commended Egypt’s pivotal role in the plan, which he believes offers a practical and realistic pathway to Gaza's recovery. Macron emphasised that the plan should also pave the way for a new Palestinian administration led by the Palestinian Authority, rather than Hamas.
"I reiterate my full support for the reconstruction plan for Gaza, approved by the League of Arab States on March 4. I also commend Egypt’s key role in this plan, which provides a realistic pathway for Gaza's reconstruction and should pave the way for a new Palestinian administration in the enclave, led by the Palestinian Authority. Hamas should not be involved in this governance and should no longer pose a threat to Israel," Macron stated.
Macron argued that this approach is the only political solution that can ensure both regional stability and security. Furthermore, he condemned Israel's renewed military strikes on Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Both France and Egypt have also called for the release of all hostages held by Hamas, echoing international calls for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Since the commencement of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) military operation following the jihadist attacks on Israel, Hamas has suffered heavy losses. However, the group continues to be an active political and military force in the region. With the return of Donald Trump to the White House, Israel launched a new offensive against Hamas, despite a ceasefire agreement in place. Families of hostages are frustrated, fearing for the safety of those still held by the militants.
Yet, Israeli authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to the complete eradication of the radical group. Some experts argue that military actions alone will not be sufficient to eliminate Hamas. They suggest that efforts to weaken the influence of Islamist militants must also involve the Palestinian population. This perspective highlights the complexity of the conflict and the challenges Israel faces in achieving a lasting peace and stability in the region.
