On the initiative of Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Founder and Head of IDEA Public Union, an international conference on the topic “Turning Point for the Caspian Sea: Transition from COP29 and UNOC 2025 Outcomes to Action on COP30” was held at the Baku Congress Center on October 2-3, APA reports.
On October 3, the Azerbaijani Presidential Representative on Climate Issues, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Rauf Hajiyev, Founder and Director of the Great Whale Conservancy Michael Fishbach, Director of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Center under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Aliyev, Chief Operating Officer of the Baku International Sea Trade Port Eugene Six, and Director of the Geneva Global Resource Database of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Pascal Peduzzi, who joined the event online, spoke about the problems of the Caspian Sea, the largest and most unique water basin in the world, and drew attention to the fact that challenges such as sea level drop, depletion of bioresources, degradation of coastal ecosystems and pollution are not problems that each state can solve alone.
Note that the aim of the event, jointly organized by IDEA and the scientific network Caspisnet, is to bring together scientists and experts specializing in marine ecology, sustainable aquaculture, hydrology, geographic information systems and several other relevant fields from more than 10 countries to exchange views on the dynamics of Caspian Sea level change, marine biodiversity and ways to protect the ecological balance, as well as discuss joint solutions.
The event will also include a visit to Absheron National Park for participants to get acquainted with the rich biodiversity of the Caspian Sea.
