The Public Relations Office of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy announced that two oil tankers caught fire after striking sea mines near the Strait of Hormuz.
Axar.az reports, citing IranWire, that this claim comes despite earlier assertions by the United States that the main shipping lanes through the waterway had been cleared of mines.
According to the IRGC statement published by state media on Friday, November 6, 2026, one tanker struck a mine east of the Strait of Hormuz, while the second was hit inside the waterway while attempting to navigate routes designated by the IRGC as “unauthorized.”
The IRGC maintains that both tankers had disabled their navigation and identification systems and were attempting to exit the Strait of Hormuz via an “unauthorized route” with U.S. support. However, both vessels reportedly caught fire and came to a halt after hitting mines.
The IRGC has repeatedly claimed on previous occasions that oil tankers struck sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the identities and flag states of the vessels mentioned in the latest statement were not disclosed, and details of the incidents have not been independently verified.
