Diplomatic relations between Georgia and Russia cannot be restored as long as Moscow continues to recognise the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on Tuesday, August 11.
“Until Russia recognises the ‘independence’ of Georgia’s territories, diplomatic relations cannot be restored,” Kobakhidze said.
He said Georgia’s objective was to achieve a peaceful settlement of the conflict with Russia and expressed hope that political changes could eventually make such an outcome possible.
“We hope that this will become possible as a result of political changes. A peaceful settlement of the conflict is one of the priorities of our foreign policy,” Kobakhidze added.
The prime minister also declined to describe Russia as an enemy.
