Erdogan plans US visit amid Trump’s tariff spree on Turkish goods

U.S. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to come to the United States in May to discuss duties on Turkish goods.

Erdogan's plans to visit Türkiye was announced by Turkish Trade Minister Omer Bolat. Since April 2, Turkish goods are subject to duties of 10% in the United States, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

“The trade turnover between Türkiye and the United States is balanced, there is no situation here unfavorable to the United States, so there may be a softening,” Turkish journalists suggested.

On April 2, 2025, President Donald Trump enacted significant tariffs on imported goods, marking a pivotal shift in U.S. trade policy. A universal 10% tariff was imposed on all imports, with elevated rates for specific countries: 54% on Chinese goods, 49% on Cambodian products, 46% on Vietnamese imports, and 20% on goods from the European Union. These measures represent the most substantial tariff increases since the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930.
