Israel downs missile fired from Yemen as Houthi threat escalates

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had successfully intercepted a missile launched from Yemen before it could enter Israeli airspace, in what appears to be the latest escalation in the ongoing regional conflict.

According to an official statement from the military, air raid sirens were activated in several areas across the country in response to the launch, though no damage or casualties were reported. The nature of the intercepted projectile has not yet been disclosed, Caliber.Az reports citing Arab media.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility or comment from Yemen's Houthi movement, an Iran-aligned group that has repeatedly targeted Israeli interests in recent months. The Houthis have launched a series of drone and missile attacks aimed at both Israeli territory and maritime vessels they associate with Israel, claiming to act in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza amid Israel’s continued military operations in the enclave.

The incident comes amid heightened regional volatility, with the conflict in Gaza drawing in multiple actors across the Middle East. The interception highlights the expanding geographical scope of threats facing Israel, as hostilities increasingly extend beyond its borders.

Israeli defence officials have reiterated their readiness to respond to cross-border attacks from any front, particularly as the Houthis, based in northern Yemen, continue to assert their intent to target Israel in support of the Palestinian cause.

Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023, Yemen’s Houthi movement has consistently launched missiles and drones toward Israel, framing their actions as acts of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The Iran-aligned rebel group, which maintains control over large portions of Yemen, including the capital Sana’a, has become a key regional actor in the broader conflict. In response to these attacks, Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes against Houthi positions within Yemen, targeting sites believed to be involved in planning or facilitating hostile operations.
