US envoy arrives in Kyiv post-minerals deal

US Chargé d’Affaires ad interim to Ukraine Julie Davis arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine, to begin her role on May 5.

“We are pleased to welcome new Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Julie S. Davis to Kyiv. Following the historic Ukraine Reconstruction Fund Agreement signing, Ambassador Davis arrives in Ukraine at a critical time to carry forward President Trump’s policy to end the war and ensure lasting peace and prosperity in Ukraine,” the embassy stated on X.

Davis assumes the post following the resignation of former U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink. She will serve in an interim capacity until a new ambassador is officially appointed by the U.S. President.

Davis currently serves as the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus and has held key roles including Special Envoy for Belarus, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western European and EU Affairs, and Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO. She was also the first U.S. Ambassador to Belarus since 2008.

On April 30, Ukraine and the U.S. signed a landmark Reconstruction Investment Fund Agreement, signalling a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and supporting Ukraine’s recovery amid ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal emphasised that the agreement ensures Ukraine will retain "full control over subsoil, infrastructure, and natural resources," highlighting that it does not impose any debt obligations on the country.

In a separate statement, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed cautious optimism about the deal during an interview on NewsNation. He said that, "in theory," the U.S. stands to benefit more from the agreement than it contributes.

"I wanted to be protected," he said, adding that he didn't want to look "foolish" by not getting money back for U.S. aid to Ukraine.
