On May 7, Syrian transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in Paris at the official invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, marking his first visit to Europe since taking office.
Raed al-Saleh, head of the National Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, is accompanying President al-Sharaa on his visit to France, as part of an official delegation that includes officials from the transitional government, exclusive sources said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Syrian media.
Al-Shara is scheduled to meet with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, today at the Élysée Palace to discuss many political and humanitarian issues, most notably supporting stability in Syria, combating terrorism, and protecting minorities.
The parties are also set to elaborate on sanctions and economic aid.
The visit comes amid escalating European debate over the future of the relationship with the new Syrian administration, amid French calls to condition any international support on Damascus' commitment to the principles of justice and political transition.
To recall, on May 6, the Elysee Palace confirmed that Sharaa would arrive in Paris on May 7. Macron is expected to receive him and express support for building “a new, free, and stable Syria that respects all components of its people.”
