Russian official advises Georgia to consider EU’s stability before joining

In response to statements about Georgia’s potential readiness to join the EU by 2030, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova emphasised that the main concern should be ensuring that there is still an EU to join by that time.

The diplomat also reminded of the example of the United Kingdom, which, despite its issues, was the first to leave the European Union, which had lost its potential, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Commenting on a statement from one of Georgia’s politicians, who claimed the country would be ready to join the EU by 2030, Zakharova pointed out: "The main thing is that those who are aiming to join the European Union by 2030 or any other time have somewhere to join."

She reminded that the UK left the EU for "perfectly understandable reasons."

"Just remember: Britain wouldn't have left if there was something good to stay for," Zakharova said. "Where there's something to gain, where there's real potential, the British will be the first. And now, they were the first to leave the European Union."

According to her, the crisis within the EU is so evident and its potential so predictable that it’s not a place for those thinking about their national economies. "This is a sovereign matter for everyone and anyone," she noted. "For those considering joining the EU, it would be wise to look at concrete numbers, not just slogans."

"After all, who knows what’s written on fences," Zakharova quipped.

She recalled, “Georgia and I have discussed this many times,” highlighting that, despite political differences and the lack of diplomatic relations, the two countries are working to build bilateral ties based on mutual respect and benefit. “A dialogue in this direction is ongoing,” she added.

The diplomat emphasised that Moscow and Tbilisi are both aiming to strengthen business and humanitarian cooperation, gradually working towards the normalisation of relations, which aligns with the interests of both the Russian and Georgian peoples. She also pointed out that the Russian Federation has already shown, through actions, its commitment, goodwill, and desire for such progress in relations.
