World leaders eye EU as Trump’s tariffs fuel new trade partnerships

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has highlighted a "positive side effect" of the tariff uncertainty introduced by US President Donald Trump: a growing interest among world leaders in establishing trade agreements with the EU.

In an interview, von der Leyen revealed that she has been engaged in numerous discussions with heads of state and government worldwide who are eager to collaborate with the EU on creating a new global economic framework, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“I am currently having countless talks with heads of state and government around the world who want to work together with us on the new order,” von der Leyen said. “Everyone is asking for more trade with Europe — and it's not just about economic ties. It is also about establishing common rules and it is about predictability,” she added, stressing that “Europe can deliver that.”

The uncertainty stemming from US President Trump’s tariff announcement on April 2 has sent shockwaves through transatlantic trade, destabilizing markets and fueling concerns over the future of European Union-US economic relations. In response to the changing global landscape, the European Union has been working to diversify its trade partnerships.

This includes exploring opportunities to strengthen economic ties with other major global players, such as China, to ensure stability and open new avenues for growth. Von der Leyen expressed optimism about Europe’s position in the evolving world order.

“Europe is wide awake,” she declared, noting that the EU now has a unique opportunity to play a “strong role” in the reshaping of global economic relations. “We must now use this momentum to open up new markets for our companies and establish as close a relationship as possible with many countries that have the same interests as us,” von der Leyen emphasised.
