Washington eyes critical minerals, offshore gas cooperation with India – VP Vance

US Vice President JD Vance has said that Washington is eager to collaborate more with New Delhi across sectors ranging from energy and defence to critical minerals and high-tech manufacturing.

Addressing a trade event in Jaipur, India, on April 22, Vance noted America’s interest in helping India explore offshore natural gas reserves and secure access to critical mineral supplies essential for clean energy technologies. “We want to help India explore offshore gas reserves and critical mineral supplies,” he said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Indian media.

Throughout his address, Vance repeatedly stressed the alignment of long-term goals between the two nations. “We want to collaborate more with India,” he said. “We have common goals.”

The Vice President’s remarks come amid renewed efforts by both governments to inject momentum into their strategic partnership, with trade, energy security, and defense emerging as top priorities.

JD Vance also called for India to increase its purchase of American military equipment, including F-35 fighter jets.

Vance highlighted the already strong defence ties between the two countries, noting the shared national security goals and the potential to build cutting-edge military platforms together.

“We want to collaborate more, we want to work together more, and we of course want your nations to buy more of our American military equipment,” Vance said, stressing that advanced platforms like the F-35s would enable the Indian Air Force to protect its airspace and citizens "like never before".

"In defence, our countries enjoy a close relationship... we can build many military platforms," Vance said, adding that both countries shared common goals in both economics and national security. "In India, America has a friend," Vance said.

To note, Vance, along with his wife Usha and their three children, is on a four-day state visit to India.

This trip comes amid reciprocal tariff announcements made by US President Donald Trump earlier this month. India was hit with 26 per cent tariff, which has been put on a 90-day pause for now.
