TIRANA, Albania, May 16. We are facing forces that threaten the very foundations of Europe, the Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama said during the first plenary session of the 6th Summit of the European Political Community in Tirana, Trend reports.
“External aggression, internal disunity, the ghosts of imperial myths, shifting geopolitical alliances, the instability of global trade and the deep, very deep distrust of many in the idea of a new Europe for a new time.
However, I believe that now is the best time to remind ourselves that while we rightly reflect on a Europe capable of resistance, defense and the development of new military capabilities, we must not forget the other Europe - the Europe of enlightenment, of human reason and the quest for perpetual peace, not only among ourselves but even with our enemies,” he stated.
Rama noted that it was this Europe, which once gave birth to the most incredible political project in human history - the European Union - that showed that even former mortal enemies can come together, with the wounds of battle still unhealed, and create an alliance for life.
“They have turned old bloody rivers into new paths to peace by agreeing that conflict can only be curbed through trade, that free trade is necessary for free thinking, and that security is provided not by increasing threats but by expanding rights and interests,” he said.
