Twin earthquakes hit Istanbul’s Silivri District, strongest measured at 6.2

After a 3.9-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Silivri in Istanbul, a second, more powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck the area.

The tremor, which lasted for 10 seconds, caused widespread panic, Caliber.Az reports, citing the official X (formerly Twitter) account of Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

The earthquake was recorded at 13:13, with its epicentre located in the Sea of Marmara, off the coast of Istanbul’s Silivri district.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 6.99 km.

A second strong earthquake followed at 13:39, also off the coast of Silivri. Reports state that the magnitude of this second quake was approximately 6.2. It occurred at a depth of 6.99 km.
