U.S. President Donald Trump has called for an urgent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian officials to discuss a potential end to the ongoing conflict, criticising Ukraine’s reluctance to pursue peace talks.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump insisted that Ukraine should immediately agree to meet with Putin in Türkiye on May 15, where discussions could focus on a possible resolution to the war, Caliber.Az reports.
“President Putin of Russia doesn’t want to have a Cease Fire Agreement with Ukraine, but rather wants to meet on Thursday, in Türkiye, to negotiate a possible end to the BLOODBATH,” Trump wrote. “Ukraine should agree to this, IMMEDIATELY. At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders and the U.S. will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly!”
Trump further expressed doubt over Ukraine’s willingness to engage with Russia, questioning the timing of their decision to avoid talks. He also took issue with Putin’s current focus on commemorating the Victory of World War II. “I’m starting to doubt that Ukraine will make a deal with Putin, who’s too busy celebrating the Victory of World War ll, which could not have been won (not even close!) without the United States of America,” he wrote.
In his message, Trump urged for swift action, demanding the meeting be held immediately to address the war's ongoing toll on both nations. “HAVE THE MEETING, NOW!!!,” he concluded.
