Carlo Ancelotti is expected to leave his position as Real Madrid head coach following the Copa del Rey final on April 26.
The Italian's future with the club became uncertain after his team’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Arsenal, where Real Madrid lost 2-1 at home and 5-1 on aggregate, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Ancelotti is set to remain in charge until the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona in Seville, but his departure is anticipated shortly thereafter. Real Madrid and Barcelona are in a battle for the domestic double, with Ancelotti’s side trailing Barcelona by four points in the league with seven games remaining. The two teams are set to meet in El Clásico on May 11, but Ancelotti is not expected to manage the game.
After the loss to Arsenal, Ancelotti discussed his future at Real Madrid, stating: "Maybe the club decides to replace me, and maybe it could be this year, or next year when my contract is over. But when I am done here, I will be grateful to this club. That could be tomorrow, 10 days, one month or in one year, but if my contract ends or doesn't end, I really don't care."
"We have managed the bright side many times, and we have won titles, but we need to manage the dark side too. We need to accept it because over the two games, Arsenal have been better than us."
Ancelotti returned to Real Madrid in the summer of 2021 and has won 11 trophies in his second stint, including two La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies, and the Club World Cup.
Brazil remains hopeful of securing Ancelotti as their head coach, with Brazilian businessman Diego Fernandes reportedly working on a deal. While Fernandes is not officially linked to the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF), he is said to be in close contact with Ancelotti’s team and is seen as a key figure in efforts to bring the Italian to Brazil.
There is growing concern in Brazil that time is running out to make the appointment, especially with the team’s next World Cup 2026 qualifying matches against Paraguay and Ecuador in June. Brazil has been without a manager since sacking Dorival Junior in March following a 4-1 loss to Argentina.
