The first phase of resettlement to Azerbaijan’s Khojavand District is set to begin this summer, as restoration efforts advance across the liberated territories.
The announcement was made by Emin Huseynov, the Special Representative of the President in the Aghdam, Fuzuli, and Khojavand districts, during the First Cultural Forum of the Islamic World held in the city of Shusha, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
According to Huseynov, reconstruction work is actively progressing in the city of Khojavand, as well as in the surrounding villages and the settlement of Hadrut.
“As the restoration works are completed, starting from this summer, residents will be gradually relocated to the area,” he said.
Demining operations continue to play a critical role in the resettlement process. Huseynov said that approximately 40% of the total land across Aghdam, Fuzuli, and Khojavand districts has been cleared of mines.
According to him, Aghdam has seen the clearance of around 50% of its territory, while Fuzuli leads with 60%.
"The least amount of territory has been cleared in Khojavand. But the work continues, as there are many historical and cultural sites in this area," he said.
Azerbaijan officially launched the "Great Return" project in 2022, following two years of planning, demining, and reconstruction efforts after the end of the Second Karabakh War in November 2020.
The "Great Return" project of Azerbaijan refers to the large-scale government initiative aimed at the resettlement of Azerbaijani internally displaced persons (IDPs) to territories that were liberated following the Second Karabakh War in 2020. The project is a cornerstone of Azerbaijan’s post-conflict reconstruction and reintegration strategy, and includes comprehensive plans for rebuilding cities and villages, restoring infrastructure, ensuring security, and creating sustainable living conditions.
