Trump says he expects to meet Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei

U.S. President Donald Trump said he expects to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei at some point, expressing optimism about relations with Tehran despite stalled peace negotiations amid the ongoing conflict between the two countries.

Speaking in a “Pod Force One” interview for New York Post released on June 3, Trump said he would welcome direct talks with the Iranian leader.

“Yeah, I’d like to meet him. I’d love to meet everybody. I would like to meet him and we probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out,” Trump told The Post’s Miranda Devine.

Trump said Khamenei remains involved in decision-making despite his absence from public view.

“He’s involved, absolutely. Yeah, I think they have a lot of respect for him,” Trump said, adding that communications with Tehran have been slowed by a reliance on courier-delivered messages.

The U.S. president maintained an optimistic tone regarding the talks, describing them as “rapidly evolving.”

“We’re not going to have a nuclear weapon and lots of other good things are going to happen,” Trump said.

Trump also addressed reports about Khamenei’s condition.

“I haven’t had the privilege of meeting him… If you believe the stories, he’s missing a lot of different parts,” Trump said.

Referring to Iran’s leadership succession, Trump added: “They say he is giving approval, because that’s the way it has been for a long, long time. His father and then him, I guess it’s a succession. But we seem to be getting along quite well.”
