Georgian PM gains widespread support for chairman role in ruling party

The nomination of Georgia's current Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, for the position of Chairman of the ruling party Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia has been met with widespread approval.

Levan Makhashvili, a member of the Georgian Dream party, expressed support for Kobakhidze, noting that his active participation in party matters makes him a strong candidate for the role, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

The election for the new chairman will take place at the party congress on May 7. The position became vacant after Irakli Garibashvili, who served as party leader since February 2024, announced his decision to step down from politics on April 25.

"I cannot predict who will become the new party leader, but if Kobakhidze is nominated, I would fully support it. It would not be a new role for him, as he has previously held the position and has been actively involved in party affairs, even while serving as prime minister," Makhashvili stated.

The upcoming congress holds significant importance from two perspectives. First, it will involve the election of a new leader and a political council, which is crucial for the party as it prepares for the upcoming local government elections. Makhashvili emphasised that the party's decisions are being made with the goal of ensuring a well-prepared approach to the elections.

"On the other hand, this congress will provide an opportunity for the ruling party to discuss key national issues that matter to the people of Georgia. It will allow us to reflect on our past achievements and plan future steps in both domestic and foreign policy," Makhashvili added.

The Georgian Dream party was founded by billionaire and philanthropist Bidzina Ivanishvili, and its founding congress was held on April 21, 2012.
