Concert in Germany turns violent, 13 injured in pepper spray incident

A free concert by Berlin rapper Samra in the Gropiuspassagen shopping mall in Neukölln turned chaotic on May 3 afternoon, resulting in 13 people being injured.

Four of the victims sustained serious injuries, while none were reported to be in life-threatening condition, Caliber.Az reports, citing German media.

The incident occurred during Samra’s performance, when an individual sprayed irritant gas, likely pepper spray, into the crowd. The attack led to a series of altercations among concertgoers, causing both physical injuries from the gas and the ensuing scuffle.

According to the fire department, the mass casualty incident was triggered around 4:25 PM, prompting the dispatch of 42 emergency responders. A spokesperson confirmed that the four seriously injured and two lightly injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Seven others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Samra, whose hits have been streamed billions of times, addressed the situation in an Instagram story after the concert. “Thanks to everyone who came. We had so much fun. But I just received a call saying someone sprayed pepper spray into the crowd. I find that very, very sad—disgusting, dirty action. I hope no one was hurt,” the 30-year-old rapper said. He also expressed his gratitude to the fire department and police for their prompt response.

The concert, which had been scheduled for 4:00 PM, attracted a far larger crowd than expected. While initial estimates suggested that only 700 people would attend, between 2,000 and 3,000 people arrived, leading to overcrowding. Video footage from the event shows a tightly packed crowd. Police later estimated the number of attendees at approximately 1,000.

Following the incident, police launched an investigation into the suspected use of dangerous bodily harm. The event was promptly terminated, and attendees were escorted outside. The shopping mall resumed normal operations shortly thereafter.
