Germany is ready to allocate 5% of its GDP to defense and take on greater responsibility within NATO leadership structures.
Axar.az reports that this was stated by German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul ahead of his departure for meetings of NATO Foreign Ministers in Helsingborg and the GLOBSEC Forum in Prague.
“With the historic decisions from the Hague Summit last year, NATO allies strongly reaffirmed their commitment to the transatlantic alliance and laid the groundwork for a ‘NATO 3.0’. We are now building on this foundation as we prepare for the NATO Summit in Ankara. We want a stronger NATO with a greater role for Europe, and we aim to secure peace through more robust deterrence. To this end, we seek to pool the capabilities of our defense industries through closer cooperation,” he said.
The minister added that Germany is prepared to play a leading role in this process, noting that as European capabilities grow, responsibilities within the Alliance should be redistributed in line with economic and military potential.
