Azerbaijan's MFA comments on detention of MP Azer Badamov at the airport in Moscow

Response of the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Aykhan Hajizadeh to the question of the local media regarding the denial of entry to the territory of the Russian Federation of a member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, APA reports.

Question: According to the information, Azer Badamov, a member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, who was part of the Azerbaijani delegation visiting the Russian city of Astrakhan today, was detained at the Moscow airport and was not allowed to board the Astrakhan flight. He was reportedly banned from entering Russia and returned to Baku from Russia. We would like to know your position on this issue.

Answer: Yes, this incident really happened today. It should be noted that the visit of the delegation, which included Azer Badamov, a member of the Milli Majlis, to the city of Astrakhan was organized at the invitation of the Vice-Governor of the Astrakhan region of the Russian Federation - Chairman of the Government Denis Afanasyev, in order to participate in the events to be held on the occasion of the 102nd anniversary of the birth of the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev.

Despite the fact that the delegation flew from Baku to Moscow, the Russian side, without any prior warning or information, detained MP Azer Badamov, who was part of the delegation, at the Moscow airport and announced that he was banned from entering the country. After being kept at the Moscow airport for some time, he was returned to our country.

Regarding the issue, we immediately contacted the Russian Foreign Ministry through our Embassy in Russia, and the Russian Foreign Ministry official stated that the issue would be investigated, but did not explain the reasons for this decision.

We consider this decision by the Russian side to be an unfriendly step, and we expect Russia to provide a detailed explanation regarding the issue.
