Iran ready to conclude nuclear deal with US on equal terms, President Pezeshkian says

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran is prepared to reach an agreement in the indirect talks with the United States, emphasising the importance of preserving the Islamic Republic’s national interests.

Addressing the Persian New Year’s second meeting with the governor generals of provinces across the country at the Ministry of Interior on April 21, President Pezeshkian said that as the Leader of the Islamic Revolution stated, “we are neither optimistic nor pessimistic,” Caliber.Az reports, citing the Iranian president's press service.

“In negotiations with the United States, we are ready to reach an agreement within the established framework while preserving national interests,” he said. “However, if they are unwilling to negotiate with us from an equal position, we will continue on our own path.”

Regarding the indirect talks mediated by Oman, the president mentioned that his administration has emphasized from the very beginning its desire to enhance political, economic, scientific, and cultural relationships with other states, particularly Islamic and neighboring countries. He added that the Islamic Republic pursues constructive interaction based on mutual respect.

Pezeshkian also stated that the Iranian nation does not seek conflict but will not accept bullying and pressure. He noted that numerous Iranian elites have been assassinated because adversaries do not want to see talented individuals remain in the country, so that it can bring any calamity to this nation and its resources.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the president advocated for balanced development in Iran’s provinces to pave the way for realizing this year’s motto, “Investment for Production,” designated by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

He urged governor generals to prioritize the alleviation of energy imbalances, the development of educational equity, and the improvement of people’s livelihoods through creative management to foster sustainable and balanced progress.

To recall, the second round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks took place on April 19, 2025, in Rome, following an initial meeting in Oman a week earlier. The discussions were mediated by Oman and led by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Both sides described the talks as "constructive" and agreed to continue negotiations.

Key issues included Iran's uranium enrichment program, which the U.S. seeks to dismantle, while Iran insists on maintaining for peaceful purposes. The parties agreed to commence expert-level discussions in Oman on April 23, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for April 26.

These talks occur amid heightened tensions, with President Trump issuing a 60-day ultimatum for substantial progress or potential military action. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has expressed cautious optimism, while Israel has not ruled out a military strike

The third round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, in Oman. These indirect negotiations, mediated by Oman, aim to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement, which the U.S. exited in 2018. The discussions focus on limiting Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for lifting U.S. sanctions.
