Kremlin: Viable settlement on Ukraine should not be rushed

Russia and the United States remain in contact through various channels, but any viable settlement to the conflict in Ukraine should not be constrained by tight deadlines, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

Speaking to a journalist, Peskov said the issue of resolving the war is far too complex to be subjected to strict timeframes, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

"We continue our contacts with the Americans through various channels. This issue is so complex, tied to the settlement process, that it probably shouldn't be forced into rigid deadlines. Attempting to fit a viable resolution into short timeframes is likely a fruitless exercise," Peskov said.

To recall, as of April 22, 2025, Russia–U.S. talks on a Ukraine settlement have intensified but remain fraught with challenges. President Vladimir Putin has signaled openness to peace discussions, particularly regarding halting attacks on civilian infrastructure. However, Russia's conditions, such as Ukraine holding new elections, are currently unfeasible due to martial law.

The U.S., under President Donald Trump, has proposed significant concessions, including recognizing Crimea as Russian territory and barring Ukraine from NATO membership. These terms have been previously rejected by Kyiv. European allies have expressed concerns over these proposals, emphasizing non-negotiable issues to the U.S. to safeguard European security interests.

Despite a brief Easter ceasefire, hostilities have resumed, with Russian drone attacks on cities like Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, resulting in civilian casualties. High-level meetings involving Ukraine, the U.S., UK, France, and Germany are scheduled in London to push forward peace negotiations. However, skepticism remains about the feasibility of a swift resolution, given the complexities and ongoing violations.
